Speech and Language Pathologists (SLPs) provide a wide range of services, mainly on an individual basis, but also as support for individual families, support groups, as well as providing information for the general public. Speech services begin with assessment and diagnosis, and continue with intervention and treatment for the following disorders:

  • Cognitive aspects of communication (e.g., attention, memory, problem solving, executive functions)
  • Speech (i.e., phonation, articulation, fluency, resonance, and voice)
  • Language (i.e., phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatic/social aspects of communication) including comprehension and expression in oral and written modalities
  • Language processing; pre-literacy and language-based literacy skills, phonological awareness.
  • Feeding and swallowing

SLPs work in collaboration with and refer patients to educators and health care professionals including Psychologists, Neurologists, Ear, Nose, and Throat doctors (ENTs), Audiologists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Dietitians, and others, as required by each client.

An GTA REHAB SOLUTIONS SLP is a licensed health professional who helps individuals with a variety of diagnosis that result in speech and language difficulties. SLPs use standardized measurements to assess and diagnose disorders and evidence based therapy approaches are used to achieve targeted goals.

  1. If you find that you are concerned about any one of the difficulties listed above, make an appointment to see the SLP.
  2. The first session is a chance for the parent of a child or for an individual to speak with the SLP and raise concerns and desires. It is an opportunity also for the SLP to meet the individual and understand his/her needs. An intake form containing specific information is also completed.
  3. An assessment is conducted, if required, by the SLP.
  4. Objectives and focused goals are created based on the individual’s needs.
  5. Therapy is conducted consistently with the purpose of achieving the goals created. Options include in-clinic therapy with the SLP or situation dependent, a program may be created to be implemented in the home.
  6. Goals are updated constantly in order to keep pushing progress forward.
  7. Generalizations of skills to various settings is of utmost importance and this requires collaboration with family members, educators, and other specialists.
  8. Feedback to the family of the individual or the individual him/herself is vital in order to ensure two-way communication and to aid in generalization of goals.

A Specialist in Learning Disabilities assesses and provides therapy to individuals who have learning disabilities. A learning disability is defined by the following three clauses:

  1. There is a significant discrepancy between aptitude and achievement
  2. There is an underlying processing difficulty in learning e.g., memory, attention, auditory processing, visual processing etc.,
  3. These difficulties are exclusive of other health conditions (e.g., hearing loss, visual impairment, physical impairment, mental retardation, or environmental, cultural, or economic disadvantage)

Learning disabilities manifest many times as difficulties in receptive and expressive language, writing, reading, reasoning, and math, and include diagnoses such as Dyslexia, perceptual disabilities, brain injury, minimal brain dysfunction, and developmental aphasia.

A Specialist in Learning Disabilities (LD) is a professional with a Masters Degree in Learning Disabilities and a commitment to continuing education. LD specialists use standardized measurements to assess and diagnose disorders and evidence based therapy approaches to achieve targeted goals. An LD specialist works in collaboration with and refers to educators and professionals such as Speech-Language Pathologists, Audiologists, Neurologists, Psychologists, and other health care providers as required by each individual’s needs.

  2. The first session is a chance for the parent of a child or for an individual to speak with the LD specialist and raise concerns and desires. It is a chance also for the LD therapist to meet the individual and understand his/her needs. An intake form containing specific information is also completed.
  3. An assessment is conducted by the Clinical Psychologist at the clinic if required.
  4. The LD specialist collaborates with the Psychologist to create objective, focused goals based on testing results and individual needs.
  5. Therapy is conducted consistently with the purpose of achieving the goals created.
  6. Goals are updated constantly in order to keep pushing progress forward.
  7. Generalizations of skills to various settings is of utmost importance and this requires collaboration with family members, educators, and other specialists.
  8. Feedback to the family of the individual or the individual him/herself is vital in order to ensure two-way communication and to aid in generalization of goals.
